SkinMater is a custom-built eCommerce platform developed for the beauty, skincare, cosmetics, perfume, and personal-care market.

Instead of relying on a pre-built Shopify, WooCommerce, or marketplace template, SkinMater was developed as a purpose-built eCommerce system with a custom frontend, custom backend, dedicated administration platform, authentication system, product and inventory management, order management, analytics, AI-powered customer support, payment integration, and supporting commerce functionality.

The platform consists of two major experiences:

Customer-facing eCommerce Store — where customers can browse products, explore categories, search the catalog, interact with the store, manage their account, communicate with AI support, and complete purchases.

Admin Management Platform — a dedicated administrative system for managing products, inventory, orders, customers, finance, marketing, reviews, analytics, staff, roles, notifications, and other operational areas.

This architecture makes SkinMater more than a visual storefront. It is a complete custom eCommerce software solution designed to connect the customer experience with the operational systems required to run an online retail business.

The Business Challenge

Modern eCommerce businesses need more than attractive product pages.

A serious online store needs an operational foundation capable of handling the entire commerce lifecycle:

  • Product catalog management

  • Product categories

  • Inventory

  • Warehouses

  • Orders

  • Payments

  • Customers

  • Reviews

  • Promotions

  • Discounts

  • Flash sales

  • Shipping

  • Customer support

  • Analytics

  • Staff management

  • Roles and permissions

  • Notifications

  • Account management

Using multiple disconnected systems can create unnecessary complexity and make the business dependent on third-party platforms.

SkinMater was therefore approached as a custom software development project where the storefront and administrative infrastructure could be engineered together.

The Custom eCommerce Solution

The solution was to develop SkinMater as an integrated custom eCommerce platform with separate customer and administrative experiences connected through a centralized backend.

The customer application focuses on shopping and conversion, while the administration system focuses on commerce operations and business management.

This creates a complete flow:

Customer → Storefront → Product → Cart → Checkout → Payment → Order → Fulfillment → Customer Account

while the business operates through:

Admin → Products → Inventory → Orders → Customers → Finance → Marketing → Analytics → Support

This separation provides a cleaner architecture for managing a growing eCommerce operation.

Customer-Facing eCommerce Store

The SkinMater storefront was developed as a custom web application rather than a standard template.

The uploaded interface demonstrates a mobile-first shopping experience with a branded header, product search, category discovery, promotional content, product navigation, cart access, AI chat, and customer profile functionality.

Homepage Experience

The storefront provides customers with access to:

  • Promotional announcements

  • Branded navigation

  • Currency selection

  • Language options

  • Product search

  • Promotional banners

  • Product categories

  • Beauty and personal-care collections

  • Shopping navigation

  • Cart

  • AI customer support

  • Customer profile

The homepage is designed to move users from discovery toward product browsing and purchasing without unnecessary navigation complexity.

Product Discovery

SkinMater provides category-based product discovery for different beauty and personal-care segments.

The interface includes categories such as:

  • Grooming

  • Beard Care

  • Eau de Parfum

  • Makeup

  • Bath & Body

  • Perfumes

  • Body Care

  • Luxury Gift Sets

This category structure gives customers multiple ways to discover products beyond direct search.

Product Catalog

The custom product-management system supports the administration of products through a dedicated Products interface.

The administrative product view includes information such as:

  • Product name

  • SKU

  • Category

  • Price

  • Stock

  • Status

  • Updated date

  • Product actions

Administrators can search and filter products by relevant catalog information and perform product-management actions directly from the admin interface.

Custom Admin Panel

One of the most important parts of SkinMater is its dedicated administrative platform.

Rather than providing a basic CMS, the project includes a structured commerce operations dashboard.

The dashboard provides a centralized view of important business information and operational areas.

The admin navigation includes sections covering:

Catalogue

  • Products

  • All Products

  • Add Product

  • Categories

Inventory

  • Stock Overview

  • Warehouses

Commerce

  • Orders

  • All Orders

  • Pending Orders

  • Refunds

  • Customers

  • Loyalty & Wallet

Finance

  • Revenue Overview

  • Reconciliation

Operations

  • Shipping

  • Support

Marketing

  • Coupons

  • Discounts

  • Flash Sales

  • Banners

  • Sliders

  • Homepage Sections

  • Announcement Bar

  • Customer Reviews

  • FAQs

Insights

  • Analytics

  • Notifications

System

  • Staff

  • Roles

  • Logs

  • Settings

This structure gives the business a centralized environment for managing its eCommerce operations.

eCommerce Dashboard

The SkinMater admin dashboard provides a high-level commerce operations overview.

The dashboard includes metrics and operational widgets such as:

  • Monthly revenue

  • Orders

  • Transactions

  • Customers

  • Returning customers

  • Active flash sales

  • Open support tickets

  • Low-stock items

  • Loyalty members

  • Revenue trends

  • Orders by status

The dashboard also includes time-based controls such as day, week, and month views.

This provides administrators with a centralized operational snapshot instead of requiring them to inspect individual modules separately.

Product Management System

The product-management module was developed to support the administration of the store's catalog.

The interface includes product search and filtering functionality.

Administrators can work with information including:

  • Product name

  • SKU

  • Category

  • Price

  • Stock quantity

  • Product status

  • Last updated date

The interface also supports product actions such as viewing, editing, and deleting products.

This creates a practical foundation for managing a growing eCommerce catalog.

Inventory Management

Inventory management was incorporated directly into the administrative platform.

The system includes dedicated areas for:

  • Stock overview

  • Warehouses

  • Low-stock monitoring

This allows inventory operations to exist alongside product and order management rather than being handled through a completely separate system.

For an eCommerce business, this connection between products, stock, warehouses, and orders is important because inventory availability directly affects purchasing and fulfillment.

Order Management

SkinMater includes a dedicated order-management area within the administration platform.

Administrators can access order-related workflows including:

  • All orders

  • Pending orders

  • Refunds

  • Order status

  • Customer-related order information

This provides the business with an operational interface for managing the order lifecycle after customers complete purchases.

Customer Management

Customer management is another integrated part of the SkinMater platform.

The administrative system includes a dedicated Customers section, while the customer-facing application includes account functionality.

This creates a connected customer lifecycle:

Registration → Account → Shopping → Checkout → Order → Customer Support → Future Purchases

The architecture can therefore support both customer-facing account functionality and administrative customer operations.

Authentication and Account System

SkinMater includes a dedicated login and sign-up system.

The authentication layer provides the foundation for customer accounts and authenticated application functionality.

The customer account experience is integrated with the wider shopping platform rather than functioning as a separate application.

This allows authenticated users to interact with the store through their own account while administrators manage customer information through the administrative interface.

AI Customer Support Chatbot

SkinMater also incorporates an AI-powered chatbot for customer support.

The AI Chat functionality is exposed directly within the customer-facing store, allowing users to access assistance while browsing the eCommerce experience.

This is particularly useful for an online beauty store because customers may need assistance with:

  • Product discovery

  • General product questions

  • Shopping guidance

  • Store navigation

  • Frequently asked questions

  • Support-related information

The AI assistant adds an interactive support layer to the conventional eCommerce experience.

Rather than forcing customers to leave the storefront to seek assistance, the support capability is available as part of the shopping experience.

Payment Integration

Payment integration was implemented as part of the eCommerce purchasing workflow.

The objective was to connect the customer's checkout experience with the backend order-processing system so that a completed transaction can become an actionable order within the administration platform.

The resulting commerce flow connects:

Product → Cart → Checkout → Payment → Order → Administration

This is a fundamental component of a production-oriented eCommerce architecture.

Marketing and Promotion System

SkinMater includes multiple tools designed to support eCommerce marketing operations.

The admin panel contains dedicated sections for:

  • Coupons

  • Discounts

  • Flash Sales

  • Banners

  • Sliders

  • Homepage Sections

  • Announcement Bar

These tools allow store administrators to manage promotional content and commerce campaigns from the same platform used for products and orders.

The storefront also demonstrates promotional messaging and merchandising elements designed to highlight campaigns and encourage product discovery.

Reviews and Customer Feedback

Customer reviews are integrated into the platform's administrative structure.

The system includes dedicated areas for:

  • Reviews

  • Customer Reviews

  • Review management

This allows customer feedback to be handled as part of the broader commerce platform.

Reviews can play an important role in eCommerce because they provide social proof and additional product information for prospective customers.

Analytics and Business Intelligence

SkinMater includes a dedicated analytics interface for business performance monitoring.

The analytics dashboard provides areas for:

  • Revenue

  • Orders

  • Customers

  • Average order value

  • Revenue trends

  • Time-range analysis

  • Data export

The interface supports different reporting periods, including:

  • 7 Days

  • 30 Days

  • 90 Days

  • 1 Year

The platform also includes options for refreshing analytics information and exporting data.

This provides administrators with a dedicated environment for reviewing commerce performance.

Finance and Reconciliation

Financial operations are represented within the administration architecture through dedicated finance modules.

The admin panel includes:

  • Revenue Overview

  • Reconciliation

These areas provide the foundation for connecting financial information with the broader commerce operation.

Keeping finance and reconciliation within the same administrative environment can reduce the need to manage commerce information across disconnected systems.

Shipping and Support

SkinMater includes dedicated administrative sections for:

  • Shipping

  • Customer Support

This extends the platform beyond the initial purchase transaction.

The eCommerce lifecycle can therefore be managed across multiple operational stages:

Browse → Purchase → Payment → Order → Shipping → Support

Loyalty and Wallet

The administration platform also includes a Loyalty & Wallet area.

This provides a foundation for customer-retention functionality and loyalty-oriented commerce features.

The dashboard also surfaces loyalty-member information, connecting customer-retention activity with the broader business overview.

Staff, Roles and System Management

SkinMater was designed with administrative operations in mind.

The system includes dedicated areas for:

  • Staff

  • Roles

  • Logs

  • Settings

This creates a foundation for managing the people who operate the platform and controlling access to different administrative functions.

For a growing eCommerce business, role-based administration is important because different staff members may need different levels of access to products, orders, finance, marketing, support, or system settings.

Technical Architecture

SkinMater was developed using a modern full-stack architecture.

The frontend was built using:

React.js — for component-based application development and interactive user interfaces.

JavaScript — for application logic and frontend functionality.

Tailwind CSS — for responsive, utility-based UI development and a consistent design system.

The backend was developed using:

Python — for backend services and application logic.

The infrastructure includes:

Docker — for containerized application deployment and environment consistency.

Additional supporting technologies and engineering components were used where required to connect the frontend, backend, database, authentication, payments, AI support, and commerce workflows.

Frontend Development

The frontend was designed as a custom commerce application rather than a generic theme.

The interface focuses on:

  • Responsive design

  • Product discovery

  • Search

  • Category navigation

  • Promotional content

  • Shopping cart

  • Customer account access

  • AI support

  • Mobile navigation

  • Branded visual identity

The uploaded screenshots show the customer storefront across a mobile-oriented shopping experience as well as the administrative interface.

Backend Development

The backend provides the business logic and service layer behind the eCommerce platform.

It connects the different components of the system, including:

  • Products

  • Categories

  • Inventory

  • Orders

  • Customers

  • Authentication

  • Payments

  • Reviews

  • Analytics

  • Support

  • Marketing

  • AI functionality

This backend architecture allows the customer application and admin panel to operate against the same underlying business system.

Database and Data Management

A custom eCommerce platform requires structured data relationships between products, customers, orders, inventory, payments, and other business entities.

The backend architecture was designed to support these interconnected commerce workflows.

The result is a centralized data model where operational information can be accessed by the appropriate customer-facing or administrative functionality.

Responsive eCommerce Experience

SkinMater was designed with responsive usage in mind.

The customer-facing interface shown in the project screenshots demonstrates a mobile shopping experience with:

  • Mobile navigation

  • Search

  • Product categories

  • Promotional banners

  • Cart access

  • AI Chat

  • Profile access

  • Touch-friendly navigation

The administrative interface provides a separate desktop-oriented environment for business operations.

This distinction allows each interface to be optimized for its primary user.

This combination makes SkinMater a full custom eCommerce software development project.

Key Development Challenges

Connecting Storefront and Administration

The customer-facing experience and administrative platform needed to operate as a unified system.

Changes made through administration need to be reflected in the customer-facing commerce experience, while customer actions need to become usable operational data for administrators.

Building More Than a Storefront

The project required engineering the operational infrastructure behind the storefront, including inventory, orders, customers, finance, analytics, marketing, and support.

Integrating AI Into Commerce

The AI chatbot needed to exist within the shopping experience without making the interface feel disconnected from the core eCommerce journey.

Managing Complex Commerce Workflows

Products, inventory, orders, payments, customers, shipping, and support are interconnected. The backend therefore needed to support a coordinated commerce lifecycle rather than isolated CRUD functionality.

Creating a Scalable Administrative Experience

The admin interface needed to accommodate multiple operational areas while remaining understandable for business users.

Project Outcome

SkinMater was developed as a complete custom eCommerce platform combining customer shopping functionality with a dedicated business administration system.

The resulting platform provides a foundation for managing an online beauty and personal-care store through a unified technical ecosystem.

The project demonstrates DevSell's capability to develop custom eCommerce software with:

  • Modern frontend engineering

  • Backend development

  • Custom admin dashboards

  • Commerce workflows

  • Authentication

  • Payment integration
